OSSOS. XXI. Collision Probabilities in the Edgeworth–Kuiper Belt

Abstract Here, we present results on the intrinsic collision probabilities, P I , and range of speeds, V as a function heliocentric distance, r in trans-Neptunian region. The speed is one parameters that serves proxy for collisional outcome (e.g., disruption scattering fragments, or formation crater, both processes are related to impact energy). We utilize an improved debiased model object (TNO) region from “Outer Solar System Origins Survey” (OSSOS). It provides well-defined TNO orbital distribution, based multiple opposition observations more than 1000 bodies. compute probabilities OSSOS models main classical, resonant, detached+outer, populations. speeds computed using Öpik’s approach, revised modified by Wetherill noncircular inclined orbits. calculations carried out each dynamical groups, allowing inter-population collisions well within population, resulting 28 combinations total. Our indicate possible over wide ( ) phase space. Although calculated happen ? 20–200 au 0.1 km s ?1 high 9 most likely at low relative velocities < 1 dominated classical belt.
